[Mori] Dagashi Kashi – 12 END [650AAF4D].mkv
For the record I really did want to wake up early to do this episode, but then I stayed up until 4am last night reading Konosuba so, you know, don’t blame me.
But hey, I had a lot of fun with this show over the past season. Did I make mistakes? Absolutely. Among the occasional translation errors which I’ve always tried to own up to either in my IRC channel or on this blog, translating “dagashi” to “candy” was definitely not the best decision, and I’m fully aware of that. When I picked up episode 1 literally a minute or so before I began subbing it, I didn’t expect to complete the entire 12 episodes. I hadn’t read any of the manga, and by the time I realised that “candy” wasn’t going to work for the types of food that appear in the shows, I was already a few episodes in and really didn’t want to mess with established terms in the middle of a show. I make mistakes, and that’s why I’m a fansubber and not a professional translator. I can say for certain, though, that I’m a better translator now than I was 3 months ago, and you’ll no doubt see the effects of this season in my future projects.
I was going to drop the show when FUNimation moved their schedule up, but I was still having too much fun subbing it and so I didn’t want to do that. Although, of course, it got more and more boring to do as the season went on (but that happens with everything) and I was especially disappointed when Commie, the only group who could keep up with my release schedule, dropped the show. Racing them each week was a lot of fun, but oh well.
As I’m sure you guys know, translating full-length airing shows is not my thing at all, since being a 1-man show means that a lot of time goes into each episode, and I’m not particularly one to pay much attention to typesetting or encoding (which, for TV series, I can’t even do at all). As for whether or not I’ll be subbing a short next season, that will depend, like always, on which shows are picked up by simulcasts. It’s always been my intention not to sub things which already have official translations, and subbing Dagashi Kashi each week this season has turned me off from making progress on my other projects during the week. Shorts are much simpler and much more fun, so I’m looking forward to getting back into doing those.
But anyway, whatever. TL;DR: It was fun, I made mistakes. Let’s not do a full 24-minute show for 12 weeks in a row again. Back to shorts and OVAs now.
all good things come to an end. thanks for sticking with this series!
Thanks for all your hard work on the series! Really appreciate having your subs. It really does improve the viewing experience when we have a competent alternative to Funimation.
No, seriously, thank you so much for not dropping this series! I have both your subs and Chihiro’s and I have to admit that I love your subs more *w*
They seem more natural and I like that you keep some of the Japanese words, along with a little TL above because there are many words that just cannot translate well into English.
Anywho, I really hope you translate other series in the future! Thank you so much for providing your time to sub a great, funny little series 😀
I was quite surprised to see you pick this up exactly because you’ve always said you’d only do shorts. Thanks for staying with this until the end!
Really enjoyed your work on the show this season, and for a show that I just started watching on a whim it turned out to be my favorite of the season (and a lot of this is thanks to your subs).
Looking forward to seeing what you end up releasing in the future!
Thank you for saving this show from commie trollsubs and sticking it out to the end. There is Doki-Chihiro too, but I don’t trust Doki to finish series anymore. They usually put things on infinite hiatus and then release them in years later during “Dokimas” after everyone has already watched from other sources.
So, any chance of finishing Sword Art Offline 2 now? Having to edit R1 subs to get my own acceptable version is not fun (which I had to do for the second half of Offline 1; not looking forward to doing the same for Offline 2.)
Sword Art Offline 2 was fun for like… 2 episodes. And then the episodes started getting longer and longer, and then I found out that there are fucking 9 of them. It’s just constant talking throughout the whole thing and honestly, it became so much of a chore that I don’t want to look at them ever again.
But if I don’t pick up any show this coming season then maybe.
I understand. They’re pretty overbearing for any one person. Thanks for what you’ve done thus far.
So long and thanks for all the dagashi!
Thank you for sticking with Dagashi through the 12 weeks, I (and im sure a lot of people) really appreciate it.
Just one request if you ever feel like it, would you mind translating the Triage X OVA (not the greatest show but I’m curious about the contents of the OVA)?
Thank you for not dropping the show. I really enjoyed your work.
Even though you do get comments giving gratitude, you certainly do NOT get it enough. Thanks so much for all your work and most importantly keeping it on a consistent schedule ALL BY YOURSELF. That is so admirable. I’d love to see you work on more full length series in the future but I understand that it’s just way too much work. Thanks again!
Mori, I found your translation when, not exactly annoyed but strangled of the senketsu translation, I went to reddit for ideas. The moment I watched your version of Ep1, I was sold. I didn’t liked Dagashi Kashi at the beginning, I stared to like it at ep3 or so, and you helped greatly to that. As I wrote in a past comment, I was translating this show into Spanish, where I choose the word “golosina” for dagashi, which is sort-of “snack”, feeling that your decision for choosing “candy” was a little hasty. When I watched the first thing I translated (Vampire hunter D years ago) my forehead was red of facepalms, we all learn from the road, not to take the road. I don’t know what you’ll be translating, but, from Colombia, I say, Thanks and glad to meet you. I’ll stay tuned.
Hey Mori, Just wanted to say thanks for subbing this show.
Despite your small one-man-show mistakes, watching this was quite enjoyable and still better than funishit subs.
Thanks for your work and best of wishes for whatever you’re going to do next.
Hi,
I know you’re probably tired and want a break for a while. But if I can put a bug in your ear, could you consider translating the Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu OVA? It’s just one episode, and I enjoyed the show. It doesn’t look like anyone is planning to translate it, so I thought I’d ask you. Raws are available on Nyaa. If you don’t, I understand. Thanks for all your hard work!
Maybe if I ever get around to finishing the main show, but I didn’t particularly like it much.
Fair enough. Thanks for the reply!
Dagashi Kashi was an exception, huh? XD
Thanks!
Will you translate Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou? It’s going to be the bomb, and it’s a short.
Lemme know babe.
Thank you based Mori.
Would you consider subbing Pan de Peace!, Buddy Go!, Onigiri or Wagamama High Spec this season? I would be really happy if you’d pick any of them. Thank you.
Hey Mori, thanks for doing Dagashi Kashi, it was a fun little show and I’m sure a lot of work for one person to sub and release themselves. Just wanted to say thanks, and put in my request for this season: please consider doing 12-sai, it’s pretty good and no one is subbing it at all. The level of Japanese is pretty basic, to the point where watching it raw is doable for anyone who understands basic grammar and has a fair amount of vocab, I can follow it but I’m just not quite good enough to actually sub anything yet. Loli Shoujo school antics with bullying and melodrama. Should be fun,
Kinda weird, a new season yet no sign of Mori subs.
Hope you’ll pick up 1 or 2 of the new shorts cos it’s just not the same without you.
